Plymouth City Council (PCC) are pleased to offer an exciting opportunity to train as a Social Worker, commencing in January 2020.

Through our partnership with the Open University, we offer a sponsored opportunity to undertake an
18-month Post Graduate Diploma in Social Work, which combines work and study. On qualification, applicants will be able to register for the protected title of ‘Social Worker’ and will be eligible for employment with Plymouth City Council’s Children Young People and Families Service.

Applicants must hold a degree in a relevant subject and have GCSE English and Maths or equivalent. See Open University Entry Requirements for more detail.

Plymouth City Council will employ successful appointees as a full time Trainee Social Worker from January 2020. Salary: Grade F, (£26,317 per annum). Plymouth City Council will sponsor the appointee for the duration of their social work qualification and will pay Open University fees for the Post Graduate Diploma in Social Work.

On completion of the Post Graduate Diploma in Social Work, the appointee will be required to apply for a position as a Newly Qualified Social Worker, and if successful, will commence our Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE) at Grade G (£29,636 to £32,029 per annum).

Note: The Trainee Social Work employment and continuing career development pathway requires commitment, motivation and aptitude:

• The local authority will contractually require the appointed TSW to commit to employment with PCC’s Children Young People and Families Services for a minimum of two years post qualifying service from the point of receiving their social work qualification and registration as a Social Worker. Subject to the candidate being appointable and the council having a vacancy to appoint the candidate to.

• Appointees will be contractually obliged to reimburse PCC for their Open University fees in the event of certain conditions not being met.

• On successful appointment as a Newly Qualified Social Worker, PCC will continue to support continuous professional development through our Assessed and Supported Year in Employment, and subsequent development opportunities.

• All applicants should complete and submit a Plymouth City Council Application form. Your application should include relevant details which confirm that you meet all of the Open University Entry Requirement’s (set out below), as well as the requirements stated on the application form. Closing date for Plymouth City Council Applications is the 1st July 2019.

• Shortlisting of Plymouth City Council Applications will take place on the 17th July 2019.

Successful applicants will be sent the Open University Application form, and a Declaration of Suitability form by e-mail. Note: Your Declaration of Suitability form MUST be signed by your current employer.

• Essential Paperwork Session. Candidates will be required to attend a drop in session at either 1000 or 1400 (Plymouth City Council’s Children Young People and Families Service, Midland House, Notte Street, Plymouth, PL1 2EJ).

Candidates MUST bring their completed Open University Application form and Declaration of Suitability form. They should also bring original documentation of their academic qualifications and a current DBS certificate if they have one.

Candidates will be sent an appointed time for this process, where they will also have opportunity to meet Professional Development staff and ask any questions about the programme, or service.

• On completion of this session, Plymouth City Council will forward submitted forms to the Open University for screening.

• Candidates whose Application and Declaration of Suitability form is accepted by the Open University will then be invited for interview.

PCC / Open University Written Test: 31st July 2019; 1730-1900 (Plymouth City Council’s Children Young People and Families Service, Midland House, Notte Street, Plymouth, PL1 2EJ). Candidates should be punctual and arrive in time to be seated for the test by 1730. Please allow the full, allocated time to complete the test.

Open University Entry Requirements

Applicants should have an honors degree with a minimum 2:2 classification in any discipline, together with a proven record of experience in engaging directly with Service Users in a professional setting.

The relevance of candidates’ experience will be considered individually on application however, we would usually expect a minimum of one year's experience, either paid or voluntary, in a local authority or health and social care provider setting. This may include private, voluntary and independent sector agencies.

Applicants who do not meet the work experience requirement but hold a 2:1 classification in a cognate discipline will also be considered. Relevant subjects include:

• Health and Social Care 
• Nursing
• Occupational Therapy
• Psychology
• Sociology/Social Studies
• Law/Legal studies
• Teaching/Education

In addition, you must satisfy the following entry criteria:

• Have GCSE grade A*–C in English and Mathematics, or certified equivalent.
• Demonstrate IT competence through self-declaration
• Achieve an International English Language Testing Systems (IELTS) score of 7 if English is not your first language
• Undertake a written test (Detailed in the above procedures)
• Take part in an interview (Detailed in the above procedures)
• Have an enhanced DBS with lists check (i.e. checks against all registers including both children and vulnerable adults) dated within one year prior to starting the Programme
• Complete a health check. If, in exceptional circumstances, there are serious doubts about your fitness to practice on health grounds, the Open University’s Occupational Health Dept. may ask you to undergo a medical examination. This examination will be at your own expense.
